Transfer Requirements

Transfer admission to Georgia Tech is selective as more applications from qualified students are received than can be accommodated. All transfer applicants must meet the following minimum requirements by completing the specific courses intended by major, total number of credit hours, and minimum Grade Point Average (GPA), all at another institution, in order to be competitive for possible transfer admission to Georgia Tech. Successful candidates for admission will be selected from the pool of applicants that best meet or exceed these requirements, which vary by major. A transfer applicant must apply for one specific major and will be evaluated based on the criteria for that major.

Overall Criteria

  • A minimum of 30 semester or 45 quarter hours that are transferable to Georgia Tech.
  • All of the specifically required courses on the Course Requirements by Major chart for the prospective major.
  • The minimum GPA for the prospective major, which applies to both the overall GPA and the GPA of the student's math and science courses, as outlined below.

Transferable Hours
The minimum number of transferable hours must include the required courses for the prospective major. Further, the minimum total of transferable hours must be from actual in-class coursework. Advanced Placement (AP) or other type of credits by exam can be used to fulfill specific course requirements, but additional coursework must be completed via in-class credits. (Students using AP or other such credits towards the course requirements must have more than 30 semester or 45 quarter hours to complete this aspect of the requirements.) There is no maximum number of hours that a student may transfer. However, all degree-seeking students must complete at least 36 semester hours at Georgia Tech.

Required Courses
None of the required courses may be taken at Georgia Tech as they are actual pre-requisites for admission consideration. They must be completed at another institution before an admission decision can be made. These courses must be equivalent to the corresponding Georgia Tech courses as described on the Course Requirements by Major chart and the Transfer Equivalencies website. Enter the first letter of the school whose coursework you wish to compare, then click "Continue". Choose the school, then click "Get Courses".

Minimum GPA
Based on the US 4.0 GPA system, the minimum GPA requirement for most majors is 3.0 for Georgia residents and 3.3 for non-Georgia US residents and international students. Because admission to Biomedical Engineering, Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, Industrial Engineering and Mechanical Engineering is highly competitive, applicants to these programs must have a GPA of at least 3.3 for Georgia residents and 3.5 for non-Georgia US residents and international students.

The GPA requirement applies to both the overall GPA (all courses taken at all schools) and the GPA of an applicant's math and science courses including all math courses at the calculus level and higher, along with all natural science courses with lecture and laboratory components. Further, all applicants must be in good standing during the last term of enrollment at their prior institutions.
